Whatever next for edtech?

Once upon a time, giving your favourite teacher an apple was how best to let them know they were appreciated, but now online learning platform Preply, which connects tutors with students and lists 195 English teachers on its site, is rewarding its ‘most loyal tutors’ with NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

In case you’re not up to speed with these (where have you been?), an NFT is, as described by Fortune, ‘a one-of-a-kind digital asset’. This might be art, music, a video or a tweet. Anything really, so long as there’s only one and it exists on the internet. And some of these NFTs are selling for a LOT of money. For example, an NFT in the form of a GIF called Right-Click and Save as Guy sold for the equivalent of over US$7 million (it was bought with cryptocurrency Ethereum, but let’s not even go there…).

So, being given one might cover early retirement. Or it could just be a novelty to tell your friends about. Either way, Preply gave its three most active language tutors (determined by hours they taught) an NFT award minted uniquely for them.

“I wasn’t expecting any reward,” says Manny, the Preply English tutor who received one. “I’m very humbled and truly honoured.” You can see his NFT here.

It sure beats an apple.
