Special Supplement: working smarter

Preparing adults for work and understanding how they work.

Those of us who teach adults will concur their motivations and methods, when it comes to learning English, can be significantly different from younger students. Whether they are looking to advance their career, or trying to cross a cultural divide with a loved one, there’s a lot to help support them in this issue’s Special Supplement.

Kicking off our special feature, we look at the Occupational English Test (OET) for students who want to enter the medical field in an English-speaking country; what it is, who can take it, who can teach it, and who provides it.

Unsure how to prepare students for realistic work scenarios? Business English specialist, Marjorie Rosenberg gives ideas for exercises and activities to introduce to your students, with a focus on workplace vocabulary, business grammar and communication skills.

Then, Letizia Cinganotto and Giacomo Folinazzo answer the big question: how and why do adults learn languages? You might find the research surprising!

Lastly, how about learning English at the same school as your kids? We have a look at the growing popularity of family courses, how they work and where families are doing them.

You’re never too old to learn!
