New Zealand: updated work rights for dependents

Partners of students on certain courses will now be eligible for a work visa.

The government has announced an expansion to their work rights for dependents of international students.

Partners of students studying level 7 or 8 qualifications on the Green List can now apply for a work visa. The Green List includes qualifications in Engineering, Health and Social Care, and Construction.

Dependent school-aged children of those who are now eligible can also apply for a Dependent Child Student Visa, meaning they will not have to pay tuition to attend school.

Last year, New Zealand welcomed 69,135 international students, which is a 67% increase from 2022. This also represents a recovery of 60% since 2019, when New Zealand hosted over 115,000 students.
