EL Gazette can report that British Council staff across Portugal will be on strike next week. According to staff, the action is due to a lack of “adequate” pay-rise in over 13 years.
Council staff in Portugal are not unionised; however, according to the Work Council (Comissão), staff voted almost unanimously to strike.
“Strikes in Portugal are rare,” a council member has told the Gazette. “However, two-thirds of staff met face-to-face and voted 96% in favour of striking. It’s very important to us.”
According to Comissão, Since 2009, staff have received just 1% increase in pay. But as the cost of living continues to rise in Portugal – and across Europe – they say it’s not enough. Inflation in Portugal is currently at 5.71%, with food prices at a high that doesn’t appear to be lowering.
Council staff will strike on 2 and 3 of June, with further strikes planned for 29 and 30 September if “adequate” action by BC is not taken. Picket lines are planned to appear outside BC offices across Portugal.
UPDATE:
The British Council have commented:
“The British Council takes a total reward approach, which encompasses pay as well as benefits including leave, medical, work-life balance, culture, recognition, performance management, and development.
“The British Council aligns its salaries to local markets and the British Council Portugal offers a competitive package in the local market. Staff receive an annual increase in salary based on successful performance during the year
“We understand the challenges caused by the increase in the cost of living and the organisation itself is working on recovery after the impact of the Covid pandemic.
“The British Council is working hard to achieve its purpose in Portugal, to create connections, understanding and trust between people in the UK and countries around the world.”
