Raymond ‘RJ’ McLeod, one of the US Marshall’s most wanted suspects, has been found teaching English in EL Salvador after more than six years on the run.
Former US Marine McLeod, 36, is wanted on suspicion of the murder of his girlfriend, Krystal Mitchell, who was found beaten to death in San Diego in 2016. He is believed to have fled the US shortly after her body was found.
The murdered woman’s mother, retired police detective Josephine Weinzel, joined the hunt for her daughter’s killer, who was traced travelling through Mexico and Central America. Sightings of him were reported from Guatemala in 2017 and from Belize the folowing year.
Last year his name was added to the Most Wanted list, where he was described as “armed and highly dangerous”. A reward of US$50,000 was offered for information leading to his request. Afer a tip off, McLeod was found teaching English in a language school in Sonsonate, just 40 miles from the capital San Salvador.
When the suspect was arrested at the end of August, Josephine Weinzel posted on Facebook a message reading simply, “What a great day!!”
