A number of Ho Chi Minh City’s English language schools have disappeared while still owing millions of Vietnamese dong to parents who had enrolled their children, according to vnexpress.net
Out-of-pocket parent Khiet has been trying to get a meeting with those behind the Pixar foreign language centre in HCMC, after all three of its centres closed, for months without success. It seems it’s a similar story for those who were signed up at the Saigon American English Center, who paid up to VND10 million (approx £335) for their courses. Branches closed as the pandemic hit and, though students were promised online classes,, these dried up after a few days and the centres are no longer answering calls or emails.
Teachers and other employees have also been left without being paid.
More than 1,000 foreign language centres are licensed to operate in HCMC, but during the pandemic approximately 80% suspended their businesses and 68 disappeared completely.
