National daily newspaper La Libre Belgigue has come up with its list of the top five countries to study English in. It will surprise no one to learn that London comes in at the No 1 spot. According to QS Top Universities, it’s the “best student city in the world”, with great nightlife and a diverse culture. However, it’s also very expensive, both in regards to tuition fees and living costs.
In the paper’s No 2 spot is Glasgow. Cheaper than London and with a population in which one in six is a student, meaning there is a lot on offer in the city aimed at this demographic.
No 3 is Dublin, where it promises friendly locals and nearby beautiful countryside, followed by Malta at No 4. Here English is one of the official languages and the climate is mild all winter. Plus there are beaches, never a bad thing.
However, No 5 is the outlier: Amsterdam. The reason it’s included is that the Netherlands consistently ranks highly in English language speaking for non-natives and – wait for it – you could learn Dutch at the same time.
