US soldiers at Fort Bliss, Texas, are helping to teach Afghan refugees English while they await processing, according to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS).
As part of the Operation Allies Welcome, initially Afghan volunteers were giving the children English classes. Now the soldier translators have got involved and are giving lessons in American culture and behaviour as well, to help them integrate in their new home. They’ve also been able to extend the English and cultural lessons to Afghan adults of all ages.
“I know that people can get discouraged learning new languages, but we’re here to encourage them and help in whatever way they need,” Sargeant Brandon Harris, a translator and human intelligence collector with 163rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 504th Military Intelligence Expeditionary Brigade from Fort Hood, Texas, told DVIDS.
