We all need a bit of good news these days, so here’s a story to warm hearts. A police station in the city of Aurangabad, in the west Indian state of Maharashtra, is holding English and maths classes for 14 middle-school children from the city’s slums.
The free classes are being offered as part of a community policing programme at Pundalik Nagar police station. Retired headteacher SP Jawalkar volunteered to lead the 90-minute sessions that are taking place for 15 consecutive days, the last being today (11 January). To maintain social distancing, they’re conducted on the station’s roof.
“Children are unable to attend schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Assistant Police Inspector Ghanshyam Sonawane, “and many don’t have facilities to attend classes online. Considering the scenario, we decided to arrange for English and Maths tutorials.”
