Case study: Stonyhurst Language school

Owned and run by Stonyhurst College, the summer language school takes place on the historic school campus, which boasts four libraries, a new tennis dome and what is believed to be the oldest museum in the English-speaking world.

Indeed, their long educational history gives schools like Stonyhurst their edge, says Course Director Matthew Siegal.

“Boarding schools have a great deal of experience in helping students improve their English language skills, because we offer a full curriculum of study to international students year-round.

“And pastoral staff specialise in taking care of children, devoting time and resources to make sure students are safe, comfortable, and happy.

“Since our foundation in 1593 on mainland Europe, at Stonyhurst we have always had a strong international outlook. Our knowledge, expertise and hundreds of years of accumulated experience provides the ideal platform for an international language school.”

In a school where art by Rubens and Rembrandt hangs on the walls, and where there is an early copy of Shakespeare’s first folio, “inspiration is all around you,” says Matthew.

“All our students have unlimited access to discover and explore our unique history, enhancing the impact of the wonderful programme.”

Stonyhurst Language School is also, “one big family,” emphasises Siegal. “It is a happy and supportive place where young people from all over the world, learn, laugh and come together, sharing one common language.”
