Four schools in the city of Xanthi, in Western Thrace, have been temporarily closed after a peripatetic English language teacher tested positive for Covid-19 in mid-June, according to the Greek City Times.
Eighty other teachers from the schools he worked in were quarantined, awaiting test results. Teacher-to-teacher transmission of the virus is more likely to occur than transmission from school children, according to British epidemiologist Professor Graham Medley.
The teacher, who comes from the region, is asymptomatic and is one of 29 coronavirus cases identified during mass checks by public health officials. Another teacher from nearby Echinos, epicentre of the coronavirus cluster in this remote region, has also tested positive. Echinos has been locked down after four Covid-19-related deaths in one week.
Greece re-opened its schools at the end of May after a successful lockdown saw only 187 deaths from the virus in the entire country.
