Teaching Young Language Learners: 2nd edition

Oxford Handbooks for Language Teachers

Annamaria Pinter

Oxford University Press

ISBN: 978-0-19-440318-4

Originally published in 2006, the second edition of this Handbook successfully brings together research and practice. The twelve chapters cover important aspects of child language learning such as social learning, bilingualism, materials evaluation and assessment. The chapter on cultural awareness is new, and there are fresh ideas related to technology throughout. I enjoyed reading about the need to balance cooperative and competitive tasks, and the differing needs of younger and older students. The suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter are hugely useful. The book includes a useful glossary and 25 tasks which encourage teachers to explore their own practice. This 217- page Handbook offers a thorough, accessible and fascinating overview of the area of TEYL – Teaching English to Young Learners. Highly recommended.
