Save MLANG at Cardiff University!

We are shocked at Cardiff University’s decision to axe the School of Modern Languages in a panicked attempt to improve their financial stability. We condemn this action and urge the university to find another solution that does not involve putting Modern Languages on the chopping block. According to a news article from the Change.org.

The field of Modern Languages is more important now than ever before. Languages are a bridge to the global community – they foster intercultural collaboration and communication, encourage cohesion, and facilitate multilateralism. Language learning also has cognitive advantages, broadens horizons, and has even been proved to reduce chances of dementia.

We stand in solidarity with the university staff affected by this decision. MLANG is a vibrant department of warm, intelligent, passionate people with a diverse range of invaluable expertise. To cut them would be nothing more than an act of self-sabotage.

Modern Languages are too often labelled as a disposable soft skill. They have been consistently dismissed by governments and educational institutions in favour of the STEM subjects, and the University’s apparent agreement with this mindset is an insult to MLANG’s staff and students.

Sign now to stop MLANG being axed and to show the university that Modern Languages are NOT expendable!
